The film reuses one of Joker's origin stories from the comics, that he was permanently disfigured after falling into a vat of chemicals. This origin story was first used in Detective Comics #168 (February, 1951), and was created by the writer Bill Finger. The film has the additional detail that the accident has also caused permanent nerve damage to the Joker.
