The film is the second collaboration of director Roland Emmerich and visual effects supervisor Volker Engel. The first Emmerich and Engel collaboration is Moon 44 - Attacco alla fortezza (1990). The six collaborations that follow are Independence Day (1996), Godzilla (1998), 2012 (2009), Anonymous (2011), Sotto assedio - White House Down (2013), and Independence Day - Rigenerazione (2016), respectively.
