In 1979, Bally Midway Manufacturing started development on a tie-in video arcade game to cash in on the release of this film. When the programmers were given a synopsis of the film's story, they realized that it was too slow and lacking in action to make a good video game, so instead they redesigned one of their pinball machine lines to coincide with the film's release. However, the design work they had already done on the video game was not wasted and incorporated on their 1981 arcade game GORF (the players ship in GORF bears a resemblance to the USS Enterprise).
