During production on Il più grande spettacolo del mondo (1952), Cecil B. DeMille was planning to produce and direct a movie about Helen of Troy. When he discovered that another production company was also making a movie about Helen and had priority on registration, he chose another story. Inspired by letters from people all over the world asking him to remake his own I dieci comandamenti (1923), DeMille decided to make a movie about the life of Moses.
