In the film, the Joker compares himself and Vicki Vale to "Beauty and the Beast". "Beauty and the Beast" is a literary fairy tale, written by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve (1685-1755) and first published in 1740. It depicts a beautiful young woman held captive by a sentient Beast, but captive and captor soon fall in love with each other.
