Bong Joon Ho had been severely burned by the distribution of his previous film Snowpiercer (2013), his first film in English. It had barely scraped a run in American cinemas and wasn't released in the UK at all. The thought of one of his films being championed by Netflix - and thereby immediately assuring a built-in audience - was very appealing to him.
