Clues about the reality of the ending can be surmised by Rupert Pupkin's wardrobe. Throughout much of the the film, he wears the same suit, with the only difference being the color of his tie and pocket square. The only other clothes he wears have vivid colors and patterns. At the end of the film, he is wearing a mono-colored suit. It could be surmised he is dreaming this whole sequence in jail, where he would most likely be wearing monochromatic colored clothing. It's further given weight when all of his "daydream" sequences show him wearing clothing with elaborate patterns, much like his real life.
