This film is set in 1952. Several features of English law relevant to the plot have changed since then: Capital punishment for murder was abolished in 1965. The rule preventing a witness from revealing confidential communications from his or her spouse was abolished in 1984. The rule preventing a second trial for the same offence after an acquittal was abolished in 2003.
