Al Pacino was the first one cast in this film, and brought director James Foley on board at the same time. The rest of the cast was hired based on gritty, intense work during their careers, including Ed Harris, Alan Arkin and Kevin Spacey. Jonathan Pryce was basically the outsider, and was cast after James Foley saw him in Miss Saigon on Broadway. He had the hardest part in the film, in that David Mamet had written a minimal amount of dialogue for his character, and yet he becomes very important in the second half of the film. Jack Lemmon came on board last of the principal cast and called it one of the "greatest experiences he's ever had making a film." Alec Baldwin was the final selection, and came onto the film very late.
