The "Elmira" is the guided missile cruiser USS Providence (CLG-6). Footage of the ship was taken while it was at its home port of Long Beach, California. Originally built as a light cruiser for WWII, she was commissioned in May, 1945. She was decommissioned and put into reserve in June, 1949. She was converted to a guided missile cruiser and recommissioned in September, 1959 with only one of its four triple six-inch gun turrets remaining. She was decommissioned again in August 1973 and scrapped in 1980. In one shot of the USS Providence, the USS Lyman K. Swenson (DD-729) can be seen to the left.
