During the barbecue at Twelve Oaks, the men talked in the stair hall about the coming of war with the North. While most of them welcomed the war, Ashley Wilkes warned that many of the miseries of the world were caused by war, while Rhett Butler said that the South didn't have the resources for a long war. Of all the men at that meeting who went off to fight in the war, the only survivors were Ashley Wilkes and Rhett Butler.
