Director Martin Ritt was at pains to film in authentic southern locales, yet the affected southern accents of most of the players (the exception is native Georgian Joanne Woodward) were hilariously off the mark, and in particular, completely unlike what is heard in Louisiana. A similar situation developed many years later with Ritt's Norma Rae (1979), which took place in North Carolina, and in which Sally Field affected a very inauthentic drawl.
