In the movie when the General asks, Marlowe how he likes his brandy in the film, Marlowe responds, "In a glass." In the book Marlowe responds, with, "Any way at all." In the book, the scene of the General "indulging his pleasures by proxy" is continued with the General allowing Marlowe to smoke a cigarette so he can vigorously sniff the second-hand smoke.
