One of director Sydney Pollack's original intentions was to have Mitch McDeere have an affair with Avery Tolar. The character was to be changed into a woman and to be played by Meryl Streep. As it is, Avery has a weird, flirty, bromance-type relationship with Mitch at the beginning of the film.
