To help secure funding to film Waitress, Adrienne Shelly held a staged reading of the screenplay. Some of the actors who appeared in the reading included Gretchen Mol, Amy Sedaris, Merritt Wever, Michael Cerveris, Nathan Dean, Sasha Eden, James McCaffrey, and Shelly's friend Paul Rudd. Of these actors, only Nathan Dean eventually appeared in the movie, though Sasha Eden (who also coproduced the staged reading) received a "Thanks" acknowledgment in the credits.
