The monks of Tibhirine were kidnapped in late March 1996 and were found dead two months later. To this day, no one really knows who was responsible for their murders. While the Armed Islamic Group were the captors, in later years they claimed that the Algerian army accidentally killed the monks. The captives had all been decapitated with their bodies never having been discovered. Their remains are buried in the churchyard at the monastery.
