Divya Dutta heard that Mani Ratnam needed a second heroine in the film. She knew Shahrukh Khan's secretary Anwar and asked him if he could arrange a meeting him with. Shahrukh met Divya and she expressed her interest in the second role. Shahrukh promised her he would speak to Mani Ratnam. Divya was not sure if Shahrukh would give the message to Mani Ratnam. Then one day, she got the call from Mani Ratnam. She was surprised Khan came thru with his word. Mani Ratnam said there was a problem. The other role was not of Manisha's sister. He told it would not make sense to cast her because she looked too much like Manisha. Divya under stood this issue as she already played Manisha's sister in Agnisaakshi.
