The events of the movie bear little resemblance to the book, which makes no mention of the group of immortal manipulators. The divergence of stories take place after Carter has been taken captive by the Tharks. In the book, some ten years after Carter's arrival on Mars, a great machine that generated oxygen for the planet had been shut down and Carter uses a sequence of thought waves to open the doors to the facility. As an engineer begins to enter, Carter passes out from asphyxiation and dies. It is at that moment that he awakes in the cave in Arizona. The end of the movie takes place at the tomb, with Carter departing for Mars. This coincides with the beginning of the second Carter novel, The Gods of Mars.
