Spike Lee was among the many African-Americans who spoke out publicly against Soul Man (1986) upon its release. While not having seen the film in its entirety, Lee had seen clips of it, denouncing it as "an attack on affirmative action." Additionally, Lee stated that C. Thomas Howell did not look legitimately African-American after his on-screen transformation, adding, "If the whole premise is that he's passing as black and it's so phony, that means that all the black people in the movie are idiots". Producer Steve Tisch reportedly made an angry phone call to Lee after he joked that "Rae Dawn Chong's card from the sisterhood should be revoked."
