Charlie Kaufman spoke with his agent Marty Bowen about his script for this film, feeling that it would never get sold due to its unconventional premise. Bowen however, accepted it as a challenge and did get the script sold. In Kaufman's followup script for Adaptation, that film depicts the making of this film with cast members playing themselves. Bowen is portrayed by Ron Livingston as the agent of Charlie Kaufman (played by Nicolas Cage).
