It is possible that from in the opening scene when Jacob is stabbed with the bayonet, everything which happens from then on in the film, up until he walks up the stairs (to Heaven with his dead son, who died before the war) to when he is pronounced dead in the hospital was a dream he had time for before he died. It was how his life would have been had he survived the war.
