The film takes place in September 1936. Barring any creative license by the writers when J.J. Singleton (Ray Walston) announces a jockey change, the film's climactic final scene seems to be September 29th, the only day that month Flying Cross was raced by "J. Stout" (Jimmy Stout, 1914-76).
