South Africa's apartheid laws had wide-ranging effects on the production. The cast and crew were continuously reminded not to fraternize with the topless tribal dancers; the penalty for interracial sex was seven years hard labor. The Zulu extras could not be paid the same amount as their white counterparts, so Cy Endfield gave all of the animals bought for the movie, particularly cows, to the tribes. None of the actors who portrayed the Zulu warriors were allowed to attend the premiere.
