Gaumont International Television announced a pilot for a TV series based on the film by Amazon Studios in 2012. The pilot would be directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, and the series would be set in Asia. Refn later dropped out because he was more interested in developing The Neon Demon (2016). He also stated that "certain things are better left untouched. You don't need to remake everything." Ironically years later in 2022, Sony Pictures would move to remake the film, with actress Sydney Sweeney playing the titular role and executively producing.
