Most of the gay subtexts in the novel were omitted from the film. For example: Lestat expects Louis to sleep with him in his (Lestat's) coffin. Louis, who initially wanted to sleep in the closet, gives in and sleeps with Lestat in his coffin until he (Louis) gets his own coffin.Lestat, Louis, (and later Claudia), are a family. Anne Rice mentions "stone walls" in the novel, which could be an oblique reference to the gay rights movement of the same name.Lestat and Louis, even during the times when they are not companions, consider each other lovers.
