The film premiered in New York on February 6, 1931, at the George M. Cohan Theater. It was the only silent film released in more than a year, and the first Sir Charles Chaplin film released in three years. The line to see the film was reportedly enormous, and the impatient cinema-goers nearly devolved into an angry mob. Reportedly, a bystander saw the long line and quipped: "Is this a breadline or a bank closing?"
