The project was green-lighted by Universal Pictures in 2010 and Ed Helms and Will Ferrell were originally attached to star, but plans fell through and Universal stopped production. New Line Cinema got involved when Rawson Marshall Thurber convinced them to buy the script from Universal and the studio became the new domestic distributor through Warner Bros., while Universal handled overseas distribution. Helms is still credited as an executive producer.
