In addition to being a cocaine smuggler, Carlos Lehder (Diego Delgado in the movie) was an avowed Neo-Nazi, and according to police records, founded the National Latin Movement, whose goal was to have the Colombian government break its treaty with the United States. He he saw cocaine not just as a product, but as a weapon that could destroy the United States by causing chaos and disrupting the political system. Lehder helped revolutionize Medellin Cartel smuggling by introducing the use of small aircraft, flying at low altitudes to smuggle much larger quantities of cocaine across borders. Previously, the Medellin Cartel had relied on drug mules to smuggle product on commercial flights.
