Omar Sharif was cast in this movie based on his well-known screen persona in Sir David Lean's Lawrence d'Arabia (1962). Sharif was originally going to play the Lawrence d'Arabia (1962)-type role of desert-guide Malik (Kabir Bedi), but had to bow out. Instead, Sharif played the smaller role of Prince Hassan.
