The way in which Richie betrays Sam mirrors the way in which Charlie betrays Kirby in Scream 4 (2011). After believing that both men were in danger by Ghostface, Kirby and Sam are then attacked themselves and stabbed in the stomach, thus learning their true identities as the killer. However, unlike Kirby, who was stabbed deeply twice by Charlie, Richie stabs Sam only once, then twists the knife deep into her stomach, and keeps it there before taking it out. The other key difference is that Sidney was initially unaware of Charlie's betrayal of Kirby while in this film, Sidney witnesses Richie's betrayal of Sam.
