At the start of the scene where David teaches Walter to play the flute, he enters the scene by quoting: "whistle and I will come". This is a reference the the M.R. James story "Oh, whistle, and I'll come to you, my lad" where the protagonist finds a whistle which when blown releases a spirit that pursues the discoverer of the whistle to their death.
