In a behind-the-scenes documentary, William Peter Blatty addressed the extreme reaction of some audience members: "I will tell you about what I believe is the sole cause of all those stories about people getting nauseous, people fainting, people screaming, people running out of the theatre and all that. It was not any of the horror that was taking place. It was, in fact, the medical science that was taking place." This was a reference to the scene in which Regan undergoes an arteriogram, which involves a needle being inserted into her neck.
