Part of the movie was filmed in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. Almost 60 years later, part of Heart of the Sea - Le origini di Moby Dick (2015) would be filmed in the Canaries. The latter film was based on the historical Essex disaster, which Herman Melville used as the basis for the climax of Moby Dick.
