Jason Reitman showed his script to his father Ivan Reitman as well as Harold Ramis' family so he could get their approval before officially starting the project. All of them gave their blessing and Jason said in an interview his father cried tears of joy when he saw the film's first cut. Violet Ramis, Harold's daughter, was also supportive of the film and Jason's take on it. She also gave her stamp of approval on Egon's send-off at the end of the film.
