While Gustav Mahler may have inspired the character of Gustav von Aschenbach, many of the plot points in the novel were inspired by Thomas Mann's own experience. According to Mann's widow Katia, the two were vacationing in Venice in 1911, when Mann noticed a beautiful young boy staying at their hotel.
