Tom McLoughlin was first approached to write a treatment on a crossover in 1987. His story featured two mental patients who were traumatized that Freddy and Jason would get them, only for the two slashers to appear at their asylum and begins slathering everyone there near the end before turning against each other and both died at the same time during their fight, revealing it was actually the two patients who imagined themselves as the killers. The story was a commentary of horror films affecting children and the mentality ill during the 80s. But it was rejected for being too cerebral and strange for the mass audiences, who only wanted a fun showdown.
