When General Zhivago and the engineer discuss the Lara poems, the engineer makes a reference to the fact that the works were banned at one time but now permitted to be read. This is actually prescient of the fact that Pasternak's novel, and the film, would not be officially accepted until much later. By that time, however, the old USSR had dissolved and the new Russian Federation emerged. In modern Russia, the novel and film are still popular; the story was produced as a 2006 mini series remake on Russian television.
