The story is inspired by Pietro De Negri, better known as Er Canaro (Roman dialect: "the dog keeper"), one of the most infamous crime stories in post-war Italy, in which a 27-year old dog groomer imprisoned and murdered an ex-boxer who was bullying him. The groomer eventually admitted the crime.
