In the song, "Why," Jon mentions him and Michael being in "West Side Story" in high school. There are also other mentions of the classic musical throughout the movie. The film's director, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has two connections to "West Side Story." The first is that he translated songs from the show to Spanish in the 2009 Broadway revival. The other connection is the song, "Almost Like Praying," a song Miranda wrote and collaborated with other artists on in order to support victims and survivors of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The song features a sample of Miranda singing a lyric from the song "Maria."
