In a 2022 interview with BFI, Gary Oldman explained that he based the voice of Mason Verger on the single time he met Thomas Harris (writer of Hannibal) for only about a minute during production. He was so fascinated by Harris' unusual and softly spoken accent that he decided then and there that this was the voice for that character.
