It was revealed in the murder trial of Eddie Ray Routh that Chris Kyle was shot in the back six times by a .45 handgun, inflicting mortal wounds to his aorta and spinal column. Kyle's friend Chad Littlefield, who had accompanied Kyle and Routh to the shooting range, was also shot several times in the back and head. Both men were found with their own weapons holstered during the shooting. Routh, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and alcohol abuse, suffered from hallucinations and paranoia, but refused all treatment and medication. He claimed that he sat in the back of the truck on the way to the shooting range, and shot both men because they wouldn't talk to him. The gun that Routh used to kill Littlefield was a 9mm Sig Sauer pistol that belonged to Kyle. After the murders, Routh fled the scene in Kyle's pick-up truck. Sadly enough, while underway to the range, Kyle had texted Littlefield "this dude is straight up nuts", to which Littlefield had texted "watch my six".
