In the original screenplay "Everyone goes to Rick's", Sam is listed in the cast of characters as "THE RABBIT". The scene-setting for Act One refers to Sam as "NEGRO". In his first appearance, members of the audience request "the rabbit song". Sam begins to refer to himself as a rabbit, and the name "THE RABBIT" is then used in the rest of the script, although there is another comment that he is "Grinning and showing his teeth as only a Negro can".
