At the time that the film was made, cameras would often make a lot of noise as the film ran through it. This rendered all recorded sound and dialogue effectively useless, and necessitated the use additional dialogue recording or looping, whereby the actors repeat and record their dialogue separately in a studio. Although director Paul Verhoeven disliked this process, Rutger Hauer loved it, because it enabled him to focus on his general performance and body language during filming, and on his pronunciation and voice acting during looping.
