The film was initially conceived as an affectionate parody of the original cartoon rather than a straight up adaptation, similar to Josie and the Pussycats (2001), which was a considerably raunchier creation compared to the cartoons (also a Hanna-Barbera production). After that film flopped, this film was edited to be tamer and more family friendly. That being said, the final cut still pushes its PG rating rather hard.
