The role of Carlotta Valdez (played by Venezuelan-American Veronica Osorio) is based on Brazilian legendary singer-dancer, Broadway actress Carmen Miranda, nicknamed "The Brazilian Bombshell" or "The Chiquita Banana." The "not-so-subtle-nod" to Carmen is when Carlotta tells Hobie she can balance any fruit on top of her head (Carmen's signature looks has her with a hat full of fruits) and she makes a typical move from the legendary actress, balancing her purse in her head, letting it roll and catching it behind her back.
