Vidhu Vinod first offered the role of Anna to Anupam Kher. He agreed only to have Vidhu ask him to step out of the role. Vidhu reasoned that Anupam already played the same kind of character and would be repeating himself. Vidhu offered him a smaller role. The real reason was that Vidhu discovered Nana Patekar and was bowled over by his talent. He decided to cast Nana in that role.
