Writer/director Michael Haneke said he always intended Funny Games for an American audience. Since his 1997 Austrian version never gained much attention in America Haneke decided to attempt a remake ten years later set in the U.S. with an American cast. He accepted an offer from several international producers to finance the production which Haneke accepted provided Naomi Watts starred in it.
