When filming scenes set at night, the filmmakers used cinematography technique called "day for night" - a method by which scenes shot during the day were underexposed to simulate night. To achieve the effect, extra lights were focused on the actors' faces to ensure that they'd remain visible. Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried had to wear special contacts to protect their eyes and so they wouldn't squint under the heavy lights.
