Pete Docter called this movie a metaphor for his own family life at the time - his first child was born as the movie was first being planned, and his wife was concerned at how time he spent at work. From there Docter said his progress mirrored Sully's - at first the new child and the task of caring for it was frightening and intimidating, but as he warmed to the task the child started to mean more to him than his work.
