Perhaps a response by Fox to this film, the following year's L'incendio di Chicago (1938) is quite reminiscent of it. Indeed, it's made in the same vein, where the much-awaited 1871 Chicago fire also doesn't happen until the last few minutes of the film, just as the San Francisco earthquake here. Both also deal with romance, betrayal, and a cabaret-singing female lead.
